It's a warm, sunny winters day in Jozi and because we are the best parents everrr (jokes) we surprise picked up our kids from school, earlier than usual and set off to our almost 3 hour drive toward Mpumalanga. (remember when you got surprise picked up from school 😃,#justsaying)
We have been so desperate for a break from the hustle and monotony and I knew exactly the kind of feel we wanted and I knew where I wanted to go.
Walkersons Hotel and Spa just 10km outside Dullstroom did not disappoint. I'd seen images and thought to myself this looks beautiful but just wait till you're there.
As we rode along the charming countryside, and took in the tranquil serenity of being surrounded by nature, it immediately restored a calm that was missing for a bit.
We stayed in one of their few 5 star self catering cottages (Riverview Cottage). It was beautiful and fully equipped to accommodate 8 people.
The amenities in the house were top notch, with fresh, good quality linen and everything you would need to have a luxurious stay. Don't know about you but especially when I'm away from home, you can be sure I'm judging the linen 🤭, AND the entire house was cleaned to perfection.
I also love the fact that the spacious outdoor area's and general privacy afforded to guests make for a safe break during COVID, and that's obviously over and above the strict protocols followed.
This gorgeous scottish inspired country manor is well known for fly fishing on their well stocked trout dams, or indulge yourself in light or vigorous walking/hiking trail, a lakeside picnic, the spa which we sadly didn't get to, and if that doesn't tickle your fancy why not take a trot on the charming grounds of Walkersons Estate on horseback. When we weren't doing some of the above we were happy to just sit by the fireplace and soak in the views.
As a family, all we really wanted was a peaceful space to slow it down before we returned to life as we know it and we were pleased to leave feeling refreshed and even open to staying an extra night. 😉Although if you wanted to do more you could drive through Dullstroom where you'll find the cutest little coffee shops, whiskey tasting, Anvil Brewer, more fishing spots, clay pigeon shooting and tons more etc.
It terms of dining, we took our own food so we prepared our own meals most days however we ate at the restaurant for lunch and ordered in a few takeout meals that evening for dinner. Now look, I don't consider myself a food critic at all but I know a good thing when I see it or taste it hence I will say that in my honest opinion the food was NOT aweful just not memorable, considering it is a 5 star hotel.
That aside I think the friendly and helpful staff won us over. This luxurious, country living destination with all the modern comforts, truly gave us a memorable time and is certainly a place that we will return to in the near future.
